Towed Vehicle Acoustic Camera System

The Fast Towed Camera system (FTC) is an ongoing project in collaboration with the Advanced Survey Technologies Program (AST) at NOAA’s Southwest Fisheries Science Center in La Jolla, San Diego.

The FTC is a fast frame, stereo camera system with an on-board split beam echo sounder module.

The FTC system can fascilitate the identification of fish species on a survey vessels at speeds of up to 10 knots, eliminating the need to stop the survey vessel during sample trawls.

The FTC system is controlled via a ship based deck unit, allowing variable depth control down to 500m.

In addition to vehicle control, scientific data is also telemetered to the surface station.

Sea Technology Services is working on the second generation FTC, which is smaller in size and includes a real-time video feed and on-board energy harvesting.
