SkiMonkey III Heads South For Marion Island

Sea Technology Service’s SkiMonkey III Benthic Photography System heads to Marion Island.

The SkiMonkey III Benthic Photography System, designed and manufactured for South African Environmental Observation Network (SAEON) passes its Bench Acceptance Testing and was loaded aboard S.A. Agulhas II, which left for Marion Island on 10th April 2013.

Dr Charles von der Meden from SAEON Egagasini will be using the camera system to video and photograph the epibenthic seabed communities during an inter-island survey between Prince Edward and Marion Islands. He aims to survey the same sites that were photographed by Prof. George Branch and his team in 1988 providing an excellent opportunity to monitor changes in epibenthic communities around these islands over the past 25 years.
